Westland Publishing launches new imprint, Eka

Westland Publications Pvt Ltd (an Amazon company) is launching their new imprint, Eka, in December 2018.  The best of contemporary fiction and non-fiction by established as well as first-time writers will be a key focus of the list.

The first book to be published in the imprint is Sirsho Bandyopadhay’s Tero Nodir Pare, a fast-paced novel in Bengali, set against the backdrop of global terrorism. Three new novels by Manoranjan Byapari, the celebrated Bengali writer, and two books by the popular  Tamil crime writer Rajesh Kumar will be published in 2019. Hindi journalist Vijay Trivedi’s book on the RSS and a new novel by Anu Singh Choudhary are two of the other lead titles for the year.

Apart from original titles in different Indian languages, Eka will publish a strong and varied list of translations. Manoranjan Byapari’s There’s Gunpowder in the Air (translated from Bengali to English by Arunava Sinha); Vivek Shanbhag’s Ghachar Ghochar (from Kannada to Odia ); Vasudhendra’s Mohanaswamy (from Kannada to Marathi and Tamil); Perumal Murugan’s Poonachi (from Tamil to Telugu, Malayalam, Kannada, Hindi and Bengali) are among the first list of translated titles. The selected works of the great poets of the Progressive Writers’ Movement Kaifi Azmi and Jan Nisar Akhtar, Adi Shankaracharya by Pavan K.Varma, and The Ocean of Churn by Sanjeev Sanyal feature in the launch list.

Eka will also kick-start an ambitious programme of publishing international bestsellers with Nobel-prize winning novelist Kazuo Ishiguro’s When We Were Orphans and The Remains of the Day, Swedish writer Steig Larsson’s Millennium Trilogy, Japanese author Keigo Higashino’s The Devotion of Suspect X and Jeffery Archer’s Kane and Abel.

Gautam Padmanabhan, CEO of Westland said, ‘Eka will publish original writing across genres in nine Indian languages as well as translations between languages, including English. The imprint will make us a truly pan-Indian publisher reaching readers across the country—and elsewhere in the world. Additionally, Kindle’s compatibility with Malayalam, Tamil, Hindi, Gujarati and Marathi will help push awareness and sales of books in those languages.’

Commenting on the launch of Eka, publisher Minakshi Thakur said, Westland has in the last few years published language editions of many of its bestselling English titles. Westland titles including those co-published with independent Hindi publisher Hind Yugm have consistently dominated the Jagaran Nielsen Charts since 2017. Bringing the entire spectrum of language publishing under one umbrella imprint will help us focus our marketing efforts and also consolidate our work in the translation space.’
